On January 24, 2019 we went for our first ultrasound. The technician who did the scan reported one fetus. After taking measurements, they believed the baby to be 9 weeks along. Everything looked good. A few weeks later we met with the ObGyn (DC) who did a scan of the heartbeat and reviewed the pictures from the ultrasound. He noted that the picture of Brandi's uterus was tilted and was similar to what was seen in twin pregnancies. Everything looked good. It should be said that I have known DC for a number of years. We had attended the same church, been on the same mission trips to Africa on several occasions and he had treated me for malaria among other tropical issues. I had jokingly called him my PCP, which had gotten laughs from people when they learned that I had an ObGyn for my PCP.
It's interesting, Brandi named our baby BunBun. She said she couldn't name it Bun (Bun-in-the-oven) because there might be another one hiding behind the one in the ultrasound. She had read quite a few accounts of this. When we went to see the ObGyn the second time I asked him if it were possible that Brandi could be carrying twins. He assured us that there was no way. I have to admit that I felt a mixture of disappointment and relief at the thought of not having twins. Our next step was to wait a few more weeks and discover the gender of BunBun.
On March 21 we had our second ultrasound. Not being an ultrasound technician, everything seemed a jumbled picture to me. The technician said, "You know you're having twins, right?" My jaw dropped in disbelief. There came squeals and laughter of joy and disbelief from the other side of the room where Brandi and M (my 12-year old daughter from a previous marriage) sat. I soaked in the news and was elated. Brandi and I dropped M off at her mother's home and the two of us were in a constant state of snickering and happy mood. There's no telling how many times we repeated, "You know you're having twin, right?' to each other for the next few days. The next few days have been some of the happiest days of my life. That weekend Brandi and I went camping by ourselves to spend some quality time together and be away from everyone. We had a gender reveal party after church where we showed everyone that we were not only having a baby girl, but two of them! Then announcing the news on Facebook made it official.
